The Maya

Programme 3 goes back to the Maya civilization. The northernmost region of Guatemala is Peten which still conserves huge rainforests. Hundreds of years ago, this area was Maya land and big cities like Tikal flourished. The programme shows the splendour of the Mayan civilization and architecture and draws parallels with the old stone temples of Malta and Gozo. The team also travelled to Chicicastenango, a picturesque town in the highlands, famous for its indigenous market. Chichi, as it is affectionately called, is considered to be the modern day capital of the Maya race.
