The second programme
consists of a tour of Chile, a long and narrow South American country.
The north is desert.
The Atacama provides spectacular sights, interesting archaeological
finds and vast reserves of copper. The Andean altipiano is home
to the world famous El Tatio geyser field. The central regions of
Chile are the most densely inhabited and include the port of Valparaiso
and the resort town of Vina del Mar.
Further south, spectacular
lakes, mountains, rivers and countryside abound. Volcanoes like
Osorno, cities like Puerto Montt and Puerto Varas are the hallmarks
of the area. The far south is frontier land and goes all the way
down to Antarctica. Patagonia is renowned for its sheep farming.
National parks like the Torres del Paines offer breathtaking views
of glaciers and icebergs in icy grey lakes. The Straits of Magellan
and Tierra del Fuego beckon mysteriously. Nature in the form of
animal life (llamas, vicunas, penguins, desert fox, condor) abounds.
