There has for many centuries
been a tradition of crafts and craft making in the Maltese Islands.
The quality of filigree work, lace making (only in fact introduced
to the islands in the 19th century) pottery and glass blowing have
all achieved recognition far beyond the confines of the Maltese
Archipelago.
This series of thirty
minute videos records in detail the old crafts of Malta, some of
which are now extinct.
The programmes provide
a unique record and a valuable source of fiomed material for those
interested in old crafts and the way they were executed. The subjects
covered in the series include traditional guitar construction, lace
making, pottery, canework, the production of salt, the making of
traditional breadloaves, glass making, the miller, the restorer
of antique paintings, gold and silver filigree, guilding and the
creation of clay figurines.
The series was researched
and produced by George Mifsud Chircop while Alvin Scicluna filmed
and directed the programmes.
