The Caves of Gozo

The oldest legend associated with the island is to be found in Homer`s Iliad. Tradition says that the nymph Calypso kept Ulysses as her slave for several years when he was shipwrecked on Gozo. The mystical Calypso cave overlooks Ramla Bay and its red sandy beach. Other caves still hold traces of man`s early civilization on the island while others housed livestock until fifty years ago. In the village of Xaghra, stalactites and stalagmites decorate two big caves. Fertile imaginations, inevitably, created many legends linked to the caves of Gozo.
